The AV market over the past few years has (sadly) descended into “me too” gadget territory, with most (but thankfully not all) scrabbling to squeeze in a whole host of unnecessary functions and catering for poor quality sources.
Airplay, Spotify, LastFM, iPod Connectivity, Lovefilm,Dolby Volume, THX Certification, and the like all may be very fashionable but contribute little or nothing to sound quality.
Plus it takes money away from putting in better quality components!
The arrival of the MCA 50, Anthem's 5 channel power amplifier, is a welcome reminder of what proper AV equipment is all about: amazing performance that is tailored for the task in hand!
The sheer weight and build quality fire an early warning shot as to what to expect, this is an amplifier that has been designed to handle full blown apocalyptic action sequences and the subtlety of a period drama with equal aplomb.
We connected up the excellent OPPO BDP105EU via it's multichannel analogue outs (set to variable output), feeding video to Sony's simply stunning VPL50ES FHD Projector, with the MCA50 driving a Focal Chorus 800 Series speaker package.
Playing Open Range on DVD, the MCA gave a fantastic sense of intricacy and precision in dialogue. Given the accents in this great modern Western film, this is no mean feat!
The showcase gun battle at the end of the film though is where the MCA50 really stretched it's legs though with incredible power, impact and amazing grip. Gun shots (and what they hit!) had explosive impact and realistically varied in tone and weight.
All this from a 10 year old DVD with a compressed (!) DTS 5.1 Soundtrack....
Moving on to Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen Bluray (with it's much higher quality HD Soundtrack) revealed the MCA50's ability to portray the larger and more hectic action with remarkable scale and poise, with none of the hardening up that lesser amplifiers suffer from. The musical score was large and thunderous, but the intricate metallic effects were fast and defined amongst the mayhem.
There really seemed to be nothing in our film collection that phased it in the slightest, and with such control it always was capable of sounding massively powerful but also amazingly delicate in equal measure.
Yes, it's rather good!!!

Before the mag reviews hit . . .
It will be interesting to read what the various mags have to say about these little beauties but, as we never stock products just because of reviews, for the moment here are our findings after having auditioned them for some length of time in our own demo room.
We were unable to use the, to my eyes anyway, beautiful Concept 2 speaker stands due to 'an oversight back at the office' so we used a respectable alternative. First impressions were of a 'lively' sound but we soon became aware that these little gems were able to articulate in a fashion usually only found in speakers in a much higher price bracket.
Musicality is an oft abused word nowadays, but the Concept 20's really allowed one 'into the music'! The speakers have the ability to just disappear, giving a huge sense of spacial awareness.
Detailed without a hint of aggression, and a depth of bass amazing for their diminutive dimensions.
Although the bass was suprisingly deep, it is both tight and very fast with an ability to keep up with the musical rythms in a way that many speakers just cannot cope.
To sum up, and without any bull, these little Copncept 20's are a supremely enjoyable and informative experience...they also look wonderful!
Equipement used: Simplex turntable with Dynavector cartridge, Oppo BDP105 Bluray (used as cd player and streamer), Anthem Integrated 225 amplifier and Tellurium cables.

If you were not already aware, we have over 37 years experience setting up and servicing record decks from Linn Products, Rega, Roxsan, Mitchell, Pink Triangle etc etc.
We are always on the look-out for turntable mods & upgrades that 'genuinely' improve the 'musical' performance of all decks, and in this search we have recently come across the 'Vivid12' Linn LP12 upgrade kit from Inspire Hi-Fi.
This upgrade has really impressed with it's Acrylic Chassis and Armboard combination at only £399.00 plus fitting.
We recently fitted this conversion to one of our customer's LP12's and were amazed at the accurate machining and general build quality, allowing the deck to be set-up accurately with the minimum of fuss, unlike the standard LP12 set-up.
